Ise Grand Shrine
Whether or not this is your first trip to Japan, Kyoto must be one of the places you visit. From Kyoto, I would recommend a day trip to Arashiyama. You should start from
Saga-Arashiyama Station and purchase tickets for the Sagano Romantic Train. The train takes you on a picturesque mountain ride, with fantastic colors in autumn and cherry
blossoms in spring.
I would also suggest renting a bicycle to tour the local temples, especially Tenryu-ji,and be sure to see its Cloud Dragon painting, which is amazing. The temple’s gardens and grounds are breathtaking and provide a rich sense of Japanese history. You can have lunch at one of the many local cafés. Though not as well known as Kobe beef, Kyoto steak is superb.
You should certainly visit Arashiyama’s famous bamboo forest and leave some time to cruise around the local tourist stores to make sure you get something to take back home with you. Biking in this area is really the way to go as you can see many historic sites. Easy-to-read tour maps are widely available.
